The Department of Education (DepED) on Friday, Oct. 28, reiterated its stand that classes should only be canceled during emergencies and that the use of public schools as billeting areas is not allowed.
“DepEd is against the unnecessary cancellation of classes and the use of our schools as billeting areas for events that are not related to the curriculum,” Education Spokesman Michael Poa told reporters in a Viber message.

Poa made the clarification after DepED issued a statement on the unnecessary cancellation of classes and the use of schools as billeting areas.
DepED said that it continues to aim to “not only bring learners back to school, but also institute measures to maximize learning recovery.”
Given this, DepED extended its “utmost appreciation and gratitude” to Local Government Units (LGUs), partner agencies from the National Government, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and stakeholders, for “supporting and respecting” its stand against the unnecessary cancellation of classes and the use of our schools as billeting areas for events that are unrelated to the curriculum.
“Your support affords uninterrupted class sessions for our learners, and helps our teachers avoid unnecessary make-up classes, which pose as an additional burden to their teaching load,” DepED said.
DepEd noted that amid various challenges, it remains steadfast in its pursuit to provide accessible and quality basic education for all.
“We, however, cannot do this alone,” DepEd said.
“Therefore, we enjoin everyone to help our learners recover from learning losses and suspend classes only during public emergencies, severe weather disturbances and calamities,” the agency added.
