Young NPA rebel yields in Surigao del Sur

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) – A 19-year-old New People’s Army (NPA) rebel surrendered to the San Agustin Municipal Police Station in Surigao del Sur.

Col. Dennis Siruno, the Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office (SDSPPO) head, identified the surrenderer on Thursday, Oct. 27, as “Kimud,” a member of Squad Tres, Platoon Otso of the NPA Guerrilla Front 19B, Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee.

“His surrender was made possible through the negotiations made by the local police office in San Agustin and the troops from the Army’s 75th Infantry Battalion,” Siruno said in a statement.

Kimud handed over to authorities an explosive device.

The SDSPPO said exhaustion and the desire to return to his family are among the reasons why the young rebel decided to abandon the NPA cause in the province.

It said Kimud will be evaluated and processed for his enrollment with the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.

“We are calling the remaining communist rebels in the province who are still hiding to leave the armed movement,” Siruno said.
