The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported on Wednesday, Oct. 19, that it completed the 392-lineal meter riverbank protection project in Negros Occidental that will safeguard residents from erosion and flash floods.
DPWH Region 6 Director Nerie D. Bueno said the project was constructed along the left and right banks of the Binalbagan River in the municipality of Hinigaran.
It has slope protection on steel sheet piles, embankments, and reinforced concrete walls with a parapet, with a total length of 392 linear meters on both sides.
Bueno said the project aims to prevent stream bank erosion or failure to hold the water passage of the riverbank.
"With the completion of the protective structures, residents of Barangay Bagacay can be more at ease knowing that a structure now protects them from soil erosion and flash floods during the rainy season," said Bueno.
With the completion of the new structure, it has strengthened the riverbank to prevent perennial flooding that may damage properties and agricultural lands along the river, according to Bueno.
The project implemented by DPWH Negros Occidental 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO) has a total allocation of P154.4 million from the 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
