Heavy rains to persist in parts of Luzon as ‘Neneng’ further intensifies – PAGASA

The heavy rains and strong winds caused by severe tropical storm Neneng (international name: Nesat) may further prevail in several parts of Luzon until early Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

At 10 a.m., the center of STS Neneng was spotted 115 kilometers (km) west northwest of Calayan, Cagayan. It has maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 125 kph.

“Further intensification into a typhoon is likely this afternoon or tonight as it moves over the West Philippine Sea,” said PAGASA.

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau warned of moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Babuyan Islands until Sunday afternoon.

“Light to moderate with at times heavy rains are possible over Batanes, the northern portion of Cagayan, and the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region and Ilocos Region. During the rest of the day, light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur,” it added.

Despite Neneng’s continuous movement away from Babuyan Islands, Wind Signals remained in effect over several parts of Luzon.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 is still raised over two areas: the southern portion of Batanes and Babuyan Islands. Wind Signal No. 2 was hoisted over the rest of Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, Apayao, the northern portion of Abra, and Ilocos Norte, while areas under Wind Signal No. 1 include the northern and central portions of Isabela, Kalinga, the rest of Abra, Mountain Province, the northern portion of Ifugao, and the northern and central portions of Ilocos Sur.
