Three Supreme Court (SC) justices are in Bali, Indonesia until Friday, Oct. 7, for the 5th Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ) where representatives of 119 constitutional courts and councils, and SCs in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia/Oceania and Europe are in attendance.
The Philippines’ SC is represented by Associate Justices Henri Jean Paul B. Inting, Jhosep Y. Lopez and Antonio T. Kho Jr.
In its statement, the SC’s public information office (PIO) said the Indonesia conference “aims to promote constitutional justice through constitutional review including human rights case-law as a key element for democracy, the protection of human rights, and the rule of law.”
The PIO also said the “main purpose of the conference is to facilitate judicial dialogue between constitutional judges on a global scale, pursues its objectives through regular congresses, and seminars, by sharing experiences and case law.”
Published reports stated that the Constitutional Court of Indonesia and the Venice Commission organized the 5th Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice with the theme “Constitutional Justice and Peace."
The reports also stated that “the notion of peace will be tackled by the 5th Congress in the broad sense of social peace within the state and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, rather than as a concept of public international law, which relates to inter-state conflicts, as such conflicts are typically outside the remit of constitutional courts.”
After the conference, participants will adopt a communiqué during the meeting of the General Assembly of the WCCJ.
