Comelec to push through with BSKE preparations despite looming postponement

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia said on Tuesday, Oct. 4, that all activities in connection with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will push through despite the possibility of its postponement.

In an interview on DZMM Teleradyo, he said that their initial reaction and plan is to continue what they are doing right now, especially with the notices of awards as well as the procurements that they have started, since it would not look good, according to him, if they will suddenly cease operations.

"'Yung mga gamit naman na 'yan eh gagamitin pa rin sa susunod na eleksyon kung sakaling ito ay ma-reset at ma-postpone (These materials can stil be used next year even if the elections get postponed or reset)," he added.

Garcia is also convinced that if the time comes when a new law to reset the BSKE for next year is in existence, Comelec's action would remain within the legal fold.

He mentioned that they can still prepare one year before the elections and that based on their analysis, they will continue with their preparations since they cannot say what may happen. Garcia also explained that a law will not become law with just the signature of the President.

"Kinakailangan po 'yang mai-publish, kung hindi man sa Official Gazette, sa newspaper of general circulation (It needs to be published, if not in the Official Gazett,e in a newspaper of general circulation)," he said.

He added that by October 25, they might have finished printing the ballots.
