Formally known as The Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala is a yearly fundraiser of the Metropolitan Museum’s (The Met) The Costume Institute in New York, which funds its exhibitions, publications, and other operations.

According to the Met, the theme will “explore the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld's designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.” Before he passed away in 2019 due to pancreatic cancer, Karl left a great legacy in the global fashion scene, being the creative director of Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, Balmain, and Patou, as well as items from his namesake label.

Dubbed the “Superbowl of Fashion,” the Gala will also mark the opening of its annual spring exhibition, this time, showcasing over 150 of Karl’s designs, accompanied by some of his sketches.

“This immersive exhibition will unpack his singular artistic practice, inviting the public to experience an essential part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation,” Max Hollein, a director at The Met, said in a press release.

The invite-only benefit is set to take place on its traditional schedule, the first Monday in May (May 1, 2023).
