Feeding humanity today and beyond: How Pilmico and Gold Coin Group bring mill to meal

Few companies can truly help feed a nation quite like Pilmico and Gold Coin Group (Pilmico). Whether you like to cook at home, take home food from outside, or dine out, chances are, what you’re eating has been made possible thanks to products from Pilmico.

Pilmico and Gold Coin are the integrated agribusiness and food subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group. They produce everything from wheat and flour, eggs and meats, farm feeds, to even pet food. Pilmico’s operations in the Philippines are concentrated in flour, feeds, farms (i.e. production of eggs and pork meat) and commodity solutions with each division delivering consistent quality products and unparalleled supporting services. Meanwhile, Gold Coin services the rest of Asia as a pioneer in animal nutrition and manufacturing of scientifically-balanced animal feeds.

Like all the subsidiaries within the Aboitiz Group, Pilmico and Gold Coin are one with the Aboitiz Group in driving change for a better world. This drive for change is part of the Aboitiz group’s ‘Great Transformation’ mission: a bold corporate move to put innovation at the forefront of its growth strategy. It is hoped to usher in the firm’s transition into a ‘techglomerate’ by heavily integrating technology and forward design thinking in all its production, services, and processes.

For Pilmico, that means staying true to their promise of being a Partner for Growth. The company lives by the mission of advancing business and communities (ABC). It puts ABC at the heart of everything they do, from their products, to people, and to their stories of success and partnership with the community.

Celebrating 60 years

Pilmico marks its 60th anniversary as one of the top flour manufacturing companies in the Philippines.

There can be no better partner for growth than one that has grown with the community. That’s certainly true of Pilmico Foods Corporation that celebrates its 60th anniversary. It all began in 1962 when brothers Vidal and Ramon Aboitiz secured a partnership with Pillsbury Company of Minnesota, USA, and its flour milling company that operated under the name Pillsbury-Mindanao Flour Milling Corp., Inc. In 1990, the Aboitiz Group took full ownership of the company and renamed it what we know today: Pilmico Foods Corporation.

Sixty years since the initial operation, it has become a key industry player, consistently part of the top flour manufacturers in the Philippines. Its products are also exported to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar, deepening its reach in the ASEAN region. Through its wide range of flour products — from hard and soft wheat to specialty flour — Pilmico services thousands of businesses, restaurants, bakeries, and home bakers.

“Over the past 60 years, our consistent quality products and effective relationship with our partners have become our keys to success. We have risen, and continue to rise, above the many challenges we face in the industry through our unparalleled consistency and service,” said Pilmico President and Chief Executive Officer Tristan Aboitiz.

Partner for growth

Pilmico continues to be a partner for growth to its customers and stakeholders across their divisions — from flour to farms to feeds to food and nutrition.

Despite its decades in operation, Pilmico has not forgotten its core customers: the aspiring bakers and bakery owners. Through its various initiatives and livelihood programs, Pilmico helps these entrepreneurs achieve their ambitions.

Projects like “Mahalin Pagkaing Atin”, Wooden Spoon Innovation Center (in partnership with TESDA Women’s Center), Kutitap Feeding Program, and PanadHero are among the initiatives that advocate sustainable livelihood opportunities and nurture every baker’s skills and passion for baking.

Through the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI), Pilmico also has the “Biyaheng Digiskarte” program, launched in April 2021, which helps cooperatives and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) digitize their businesses. The program provides digital solutions and educating them on how they can use these in marketing their products online and boosting their profits. Each one is given a ‘Digiskarte Package,’ which includes a Smart Infocast SMS broadcast system, LTE handset, tablet, mobile hotline, retailer kit, and ICT training. Through this kit, cooperatives and MSMEs can scale up their services online, enabling them to access digital marketplaces, and make transactions online.

Pilmico is also in tune with the country’s livestock challenges, particularly the fluctuating local pork supply. To help address this, Pilmico Animal Nutrition Corporation (Pilmico), the food and agribusiness subsidiary, has just launched its fourth breeder and nursery farm to augment the supply of local pork, in line with their desire to strengthen the food security of the Philippines.

The farm is expected to have an additional capacity of 2,500 sow which can produce 4.7 million kilograms of pork meat annually. To protect against the threat of Covid-19 and African Swine Fever (ASF), the breeder and nursery farm was designed and constructed with heightened biosecurity measures. It is equipped with modern designs and the latest technology in swine production, following the high standards of a world-class facility.

From mill to meal

In order to maintain these high standards for quality, safety, as well as fulfill its mission to feed humanity, Pilmico and Gold Coin have developed business-to-consumer brands such as The Good Meat for various meats, and Maxime, Woofy, and Tommy for pet feeds.

These are just some of the ways Pilmico is taking a leadership position in innovating the food value chain in the Asia Pacific.

The next 60 years

Pilmico looks forward to continuously creating innovative and quality products that prepares them for the future of the industry.

Pilmico knows that, while it has come far in the last 60 years, it still has farther to go. The country faces many challenges with events like a pandemic altering our way of life, viruses like ASF that can critically harm livestock, and the growing demand for food that will test the country’s food security.

Pilmico and Gold Coin are ready for these trials, with future proof solutions like its Biyaheng Diskarte program, breeding facilities and nurseries, as well as environmentally geared activities in the form of tree planting activities in various parts of the country and beach cleaning activities as far as Malaysia.

In its 60th year, Pilmico further strengthens its promise to nourish more lives with its forward-looking attitude.

“For the next 60 years, Pilmico will look to continue to be a partner for growth to all its customers and the different stakeholders who we work with, all the while delivering the best quality products available in the market that have become our trademark for over 60 years now,” Aboitiz adds.
