Muntinlupa launches ‘Basura, Kapalit ng Bigas’ program in barangays

Two barangays in Muntinlupa launched today, Sept. 22, an innovative program of exchanging trash for rice to encourage people to be environmentally conscious.

The “Basura, Kapalit ng Bigas” program started in Barangays Sucat and Bayanan. It is a joint project of the barangays and the Muntinlupa City government through the Environmental Sanitation Center (ESC) and the Muntinlupa Gender and Development Office.

Under the program, residents can bring plastic wastes and exchange them for rice.

These plastic wastes are candy wrappers, sachets (such as shampoo, conditioners, dishwashing liquid, fabric conditioner, biscuit, coffee, milk and snacks), plastic packaging from online shopping platforms like Lazada and Shopee, and plastic bags.

In Barangay Sucat, the program was launched at the Old Pavilion at Sucat People’s Park. Every two kilos of waste will be exchanged for one kilo of rice. In Bayanan, the program was launched at 1 p.m. at the barangay motorpool. The next schedule for the program will be announced.

Environmental protection and the proper use of natural resources are among the priority programs of Mayor Ruffy Biazon under his 7K Agenda which consists of Katarungan, Karunungan, Kalusugan, Kaunlaran, Kapayapaan/Kaayusan, Kabuhayan, at Kalikasan (Justice, Education, Health, Economic Progress, Peace and Order, Livelihood, Environment).
