Drilon’s P680-M Ungka flyover project in Iloilo shut down for 1 week due to structural integrity

ILOILO CITY — The P680-million Ungka flyover in Pavia, Iloilo, a pet project of former Sen. Franklin M. Drilon, a Liberal Party stalwart, was temporarily closed for one week beginning Sunday, Sept. 18, after its structural integrity was questioned.

In an advisory, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) warned that “motorists may experience moderate to heavy traffic within the area and are advised to take alternative routes to avoid inconvenience.”

Many motorists and passengers have described experiencing a “wavy” ride or akin to having a boat ride on rough waters when passing the infrastructure.

The DPWH-6 (Western Visayas) will investigate the structural behavior of the more than 450-meter lineal flyover that only opened last June 30 during the shutdown.

It was built by International Builders Corp. (IBC), an Iloilo-based contractor.

This is not the first safety issue from the flyover. Last June, a crane boom of IBC hit two vehicles and injured one passenger.

The flyover, which is expected to be reopened on Sunday, Sept. 25, was designed to lessen travel time from Iloilo City to the Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
