Crashed truck yields P2.5-M smuggled cigarettes in Zamboanga del Sur


ZAMBOANGA CITY – Smuggled cigarettes valued at P2.5 million were seized from a vehicle that figured in a road crash in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Major Shellamie Chang, Police Regional Office-9 information officer, said a small truck was traversing a downhill slope in Barangay Licabang when it experienced a brake malfunction.

The truck, driven by a still unidentified man, hit a tree and rolled into the shoulder of the road.

As a result, dried fish spilled out of their boxes and were scattered near the truck.

Police investigating the crash found 73 boxes of smuggled cigarettes valued at P2.5 million hidden among the cargo.

The Dumingag Municipal Police Station took the contraband to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs.
