Maguindanao plebiscite ballots to have Arabic translation

The ballots for the Sept. 17 Maguindanao plebiscite will include Arabic translation, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Thursday.

"The question is written in Tagalog and also has Arabic translation because this is required under the Omnibus Election Code for this area," Comelec - Deputy Executive Director for Operations Teopisto Elnas said in a press briefing in Manila.

"It will be answered 'yes' or 'no' or its equivalent," he added.

Elnas said voters will have to manually fill out the ballot by answering the plebiscite question.

The plebiscite aims to settle the question on whether the voters agree or disagree to divide Maguindanao into two provinces, as provided by Republic Act No. 11550.

More than 800,000 voters are expected to participate in the plebiscite.

On Thursday, the poll body already expressed readiness for the holding of the exercise.
