Flood shield for Nueva Ecija onion farmers, residents completed- DPWH

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the 664.4-lineal meter flood control structure in Bongabon town of Nueva Ecija.

Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO) District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad said the river control structure, located along the Digmala River in Barangay Tugatog, was designed to shield residents of onion-producing barangays from flooding.

“With the completion of this project, residents now have a first line of defense against unexpected flooding, often caused by heavy rains and strong typhoons – preventing floodwaters from inundating farmlands and residential areas,” said Trinidad.

Bongabon, in Nueva Ecija, is considered the country's onion capital.

Trinidad said they prioritize the construction of the P82 million worth river control structures in Bongabon to ease flooding that has long affected local farmers over the years.

“Our farmers should be safe from any hazard event or flooding incident because it produces the largest share of onions in the country,” Trinidad said.
