4 men convicted of smuggling rice, cigarettes


A Bataan court has convicted four people who were caught transporting smuggled rice and cigarettes in Orion town last year, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) disclosed on Saturday, Sept. 10.

BOC Acting Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz said the four rice smugglers were sentenced to a maximum of four years and eight months imprisonment for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

Court records revealed that the smugglers were caught int he act of transporting sacks of rice and cigarettes on board trucks at the Orion Dockyard on Feb. 24 last year.

The BOC led the legal offensive by filing cases before the Municipal Trial Court, Regional Trial Court and Court of Tax Appeals.
