According to UP Office of Admissions Director Francisco de Los Reyes, the decision to suspend the UPCAT for Academic Year (SY) 2023-2024 is due to “continuing health risks and operational hurdles posed by in-person exams” amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like in previous years, the selection of incoming college freshmen will be based on the admissions score model developed by the UP’s data scientists and vetted by experts.

Before this, other higher education institutions including the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) decided to resume their respective college admission tests for incoming first year students.
