New guidelines on suspension of classes, work in schools ‘not yet in effect’ --- DepEd

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, Sept. 2, clarified that the revised set of guidelines on suspension of classes and work is “not yet in effect” and has taken down the copy of the issuance from its official website.

In a public advisory, the agency said that Department Order No. 37, series of 2022 titled “Guidelines on the cancellation or suspension of classes and work in schools in the event of disasters and other natural calamities” was signed by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Sept. 1 is “not yet in effect.”

This, DepEd said, is because the DepEd Order “has not been filed” in the Office of the National Administrative Register (ONAR) of the UP Law Center “which requires a wet signature.”

The said issuance was “released as an advance copy” on the DepEd website with an electronic signature.

DepEd said that the issuance was a matter that was taken up during the last cabinet meeting --- including the request to amend Executive Order (EO) 66 to allow the Department Order to “govern cancellation and suspension of classes.”

To avoid “confusion” in its field operations, DepEd has taken down the issuance from the DepEd website.

The revised guidelines on class and work suspension during disasters and calamities will be published again once the filing requirement in the ONAR can be fulfilled simultaneously with the website posting, DepEd said.
