4 fishers charged for wildlife smuggling in Sarangani


GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has filed charges against four fishermen arrested by Coast Guard personnel for allegedly smuggling undocumented wildlife species in Glan, Sarangani Tuesday, Aug. 30.

The DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Glan identified the suspects as Jamahalia Asli, Yusop Menanda, Rosky Mangonong, and Deric Bagus.

Ensign Kenneth Joy Alcantara, commander of Coast Guard Station Eastern Mindanao, said the suspects tried to 100 smuggle endangered wildlife animals, including yellow albino iguana, orange albino iguana, large tortoise, medium tortoise, small, XS tortoise, blue lizard, green lizard, and snakes into this city from Balut Island, Davao Occidental.

The suspects claimed that that their fishing boat was chartered by a certain “Boyet’ for P10,000 to transport the endangered species.

Suspects were detained at the Glan municipal station while the confiscated wildlife species were turned over to CENRO-Glan for proper disposition.
