Free, exclusive Intramuros tour offered to tourists on National Heroes Day

The Intramuros Administration (IA) is offering a one-time treat of a ‘free guided tour' all over the fascinating places inside the ‘Walled City of Intramuros’.

But it said it will only be on Monday, Aug. 29, in celebration of the National Heroes' Day with the assistance of the Accredited Tour Guides Services Cooperative.

The Intramuros Administration is an attached agency to the Department of Tourism (DOT) that is mandated to orderly restore, administer, and develop the historic walled area of Intramuros.

Inside the walled city of Intramuros is the famous Fort Santiago used to be a Spanish military fortress that imprisoned many Filipinos and Americans during the Spanish Colonial Period and World War II.

The dungeons were originally built to house the weapons of the Spaniards during colonization. The Philippine’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was imprisoned in one of its cells.

The prison cells inside the Dungeons can only accommodate up to 100 people, but after World War II, more or less 600 prisoners were found dead inside.

The IA also encourages the visiting public to explore other places in Intramuros such as the San Agustin Church, known as the Philippine's oldest church; Manila Cathedral; Casa Manila; Silahis Center; Baluarte Center; and the Baluarte De San Diego.

According to IA, entrance fee of P75.00, applies for regular visitors; P50.00 for children, senior citizens, students, persons with disabilities, and government employees. Reservations do not even applies for visiting Fort Santiago on Monday.
