Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte vouched for the integrity of teachers ---- especially those that teach in public schools --- and praised their dedication to their profession.
“Our public school teachers have always been models of professionalism, and their dedication and commitment to public service go beyond self-interest,” Duterte said in a statement issued Thursday, Aug. 25.
This statement was issued a day after Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Erwin Tulfo said that teachers may “favor certain” individuals should they get involved in the agency’s distribution of educational cash aid to students in crisis.
Tulfo’s statement earned the ire of groups and demanded he issues an apology for “insulting” the teachers.

Duterte also praised teachers, noting that their sacrifice is priceless.
She also recognized their contribution to nation-building since the responsibility to guide the students to learn and achieve their dreams in life lies in their hands.
Teachers, Duterte said, also value their dignity as the foundation that strengthens their profession.
“They embody selflessness, and their love of country and fellowmen is something that cannot be questioned,” she added.
Meanwhile, Duterte said that DepEd maintains its willingness to coordinate and cooperate with other national government agencies, such as the DSWD, especially for programs “aimed to benefit our learners and teachers.”
