PDEA: Prominent persons, gov’t officials under surveillance for illegal drug ties in Central Visayas

CEBU CITY – Prominent personalities, including government officials, in Central Visayas are being closely monitored for alleged involvement in illegal drug activities.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA-7) director Levi Ortiz said they are closing in on prominent personalities, which shows that the campaign against illegal drugs is not letting up.

Ortiz said the PDEA 7 also wants to show to the public that no one will be spared in the fight against illegal drugs.

"That's the purpose of the PDEA 7. To show that we are not selective in tracking down people who are into illegal drug activities," said Ortiz.

Ortiz's pronouncement came after an incumbent barangay councilman in Naga City, Cebu was arrested after packs of suspected shabu were found in his house.

Aside from Renante Chiong, there are other government officials that are being monitored by the PDEA 7, said Ortiz.

"There are still others that we are monitoring. We still have to do more case build-up so that when we apply for a search warrant, it will be a tight one," Ortiz said.

Ortiz emphasized that the community plays an important role in the fight against illegal drugs.

The PDEA 7 urged the public to provide information so that those individuals engaged in illegal drug peddling will be unmasked. "We can assure that identities of the informants will be kept confidential," said Ortiz.
