Iligan police chief cracks whip on ‘kamote’ riders

ILIGAN CITY – City police chief Police Col. Dominador N. Estrada is targeting “kamote” or motorcycle riders violating road rules and figuring in accidents that can be avoided.

Estrada made the move as he has expressed alarm over the rising number of road accidents in this city in which motorcycles are mostly involved.

In a press conference Tuesday, Aug. 23, Estrada said that in a span of one month and 22 days, 410 traffic accidents were recorded with motorcycles having the highest number at 317.

The most common reason for these accidents is riders not following traffic rules that result in collision with other vehicles.

Estrada hopes that with a new traffic chief, the alarming driving behavior will change.

He said that they will double their efforts to implement traffic rules and regulations to reduce the high number of accidents.

Iligan Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Monadato Mangadang said acquiring a motorcycle is easy with the many dealers around.

“For as long as you have P1,500 to P2,000 (downpayment), you can have a brand new motorcycle,” Mangadang said.

He blamed the problem of accidents not on those who want a motorcycle but on undisciplined motorists.
