AVC Cup to stake FIVB points starting next year

The Philippines women's volleyball team will now get a fighting chance of earning valuable FIVB points and compete in the prestigious Volleyball Nations League Challenger Cup.

Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) control committee president and technical director Dr. Han Joo Eom said on Saturday, Aug. 20, that the AVC Cup for Women will now be held annually starting next year where precious points will be up for grabs.

The tournament, previously held every two years, will serve as qualification for teams that aspire to join the Challenger Cup.

"We had a very hard time this year because many teams promised to come to the competition. But because of the situation, they are all missing," Eom said.

"The championship is now more important," Eom added.

Eom also extended gratitude to the country for hosting the tournament despite facing difficulties to prepare for the competition.

Placing ninth at the 2018 AVC Cup, the Filipina spikers will share the stage with China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Australia starting Sunday, Aug. 21, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. (Nikole Javier)
