29 hurt in stampede in DSWD educational aid distribution in Zamboanga City


ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least 29 people were injured in a stampede in the distribution of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) educational assistance here Saturday, Aug. 20, at the City Coliseum in Barangay Tetuan.

Records from the Zamboanga City Medical Center said the injured were two men and 27 women between 16 and 58-years-old.

Majority of them were recipients of the cash aid.

The Public Information Office here said most of the victims have been waiting in line for the opportunity to receive the assistance since Friday night, Aug. 19.

The injured were taken to the emergency unit of the Zamboanga City Medical Center. No patients were reported in critical condition as of posting time.

Mayor John Dalipe here went to the site of the stampede and assisted the victims.

"We have coordinated for additional manpower to look after the people who has been here since dawn," adding that the city government is prepared to assist the victims who wish to receive educational assistance from the government.
