Magnitude 5.5 quake jolts Davao del Sur — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Davao del Sur on Monday afternoon, Aug. 15.

It was initially measured as a magnitude 5.6 quake but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.5.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 12 kilometers (km) southwest of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur at 4:23 p.m.

It was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Kidapawan City; Davao City; Tupi and Polomolok, South Cotabato; and Malungon, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said it was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Sta. Cruz, Bansalan, Digos City, and Matanao, Davao del Sur; Koronadal City; Tampakan, Norala, and Banga, South Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani; Lutayan, Columbio, Pres. Quirino, Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat; and Tulunan and M’lang, Cotabato.

Cotabato City; Tantangan, Surallah, Kiamba, and Glan, Sarangani; Palimbang, Isulan, Tacurong, and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat; Magpet, Arakan, Pigcawayan and Pres. Roxas, Cotabato felt the earthquake at Intensity III (weak).

Meanwhile, Maasim, Sarangani felt it at Intensity II (slightly felt).

Phivolcs said the earthquake may have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructures.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
