A commitment to make Lasik eye surgery accessible to more needy Filipinos

Based on a 2018 study, the prevalence rate of vision impairment and blindness in the country is at about 1.98-percent, where eye issues mainly involve cataract, uncorrected error of refraction, glaucoma, and maculopathy/diabetic retinopathy.

Sadly, many Filipinos with eye problems end up not having their eyes checked for a variety of reasons, with financial as the most common. Many Filipinos still believe that medical procedures, even just a simple eye exam, is costly. They would rather spend their money to put food on the table for the family and just bear with the effects of slowly losing their vision than go through an expensive eye surgery.

And this is this kind of perception that Dr. Ches Heredia, M.D., DBPO and Chief Executive Officer of Borough Lasik Center in Manila, would like to change.

“Our eyes are one of the most, if not the most, important sensory organs of our body. Without it, we can’t go anywhere without assistance, work would be difficult, especially those who use their eyes more in their performance of work like writers, even doctors. But essentially, blindness can affect anybody. By going blind, we will not be able to appreciate much the beauty of the world and the people around us. But there are solutions, better ones and not necessarily too expensive,” says Dr. Heredia.

Dr. Heredia cited the popular 'LASIK,' or Laser-Assisted in SItu Keratomileusis, which uses lasers to subtly reshape the cornea. This has become a commonly performed laser refractive procedure with the fastest results, and is offered at the Borough Lasik Center, one of the country’s premier eye surgery clinics located at the SM Mall of Asia. “Our goal is to revolutionize Lasik procedure and make it more available to more Filipinos,” he pointed out.

“Compared to a few years before when Lasik was still quite expensive, it is quite different now. Laser technology used in Lasik has become more advanced, yet a bit less expensive. That would be good news to many Filipinos with vision problems. With Lasik, serious eye problems can still be corrected, but the important thing here is that we should take care of our eyes,” Dr. Heredia emphasizes.

But even if Lasik surgery continues to be on the premium side, Dr. Heredia said that at Borough Lasik Center, they made it a point to make their Lasik surgery at a premium level, but at a competitive and friendly price that Filipinos will find exemplary. “Our difference here at Borough Lasik Center is that our services and solutions to eye problems are at a premium level, but at a price point that is wallet-friendly,” he adds.

With vision as one of the primary senses that is used and often abused, Borough Lasik Center also continues to advocate the importance of proper eye care and regular eye check-up along with right treatment to have a better vision and brighter future. Borough Lasik Center also joins the government’s efforts, particularly the Department of Health, with the theme “Malabong Mata’y Iwasan, Pag-Konsulta sa Mata’y i-Practice yan para sa #HealthyPilippinas!” in connection with the celebration of Sight Saving Month this August to promote awareness about proper eye care and the value of eye check-up.

Another bit of good news is that those with eye problems down south, in Mindanao in particular, won’t have to travel far to Manila to avail of quality and premium yet competitively priced Lasik eye surgery since Borough Lasik Center is now in Davao City. The Borough Lasik Center is located at Door 8 & 9, JJ’s Commune, Loyola Street, Barrio Obrero, Bajada, J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City.
