Imee: Time to overhaul electric coops, review EPIRA law

Senator Imee Marcos joined her colleagues in the 24-member Senate Tuesday, Aug. 9 in seeking an overhaul of electric cooperatives as well as a review of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001.

Marcos, chairwoman of the Senate Cooperatives Committee, focuses her attention on the role and leadership of electric cooperatives.

‘’There is a need to professionalize the leadership of electric cooperatives by imposing standards on the members of the board,’’ she said.

Marcos stressed that there is also a need to address the difficulties of electric cooperatives in procuring supply- assessing franchise areas of low demand to "even" out with more profitable areas, perhaps even allowing successful electric cooperatives to take over the franchise areas of low performing electric cooperatives.

‘’Much has to be done to guarantee reliable and affordable power for our consumers,’’ she added.
