Floods from heavy rains inundate Metro Cebu

CEBU CITY – Several areas in Metro Cebu were flooded following a heavy downpour that lasted for hours Thursday night, August 4.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) reported that a man was rescued after he was swept away by rampaging water on the Kinalumsan River in Barangay Mambaling here.

The rescued individual was identified as Basil Baylosis, the CCDRRMO said. Baylosis was the person in a video that made the rounds on social showing him and a damaged house being swept away by a strong current of water.

The downpour which started around 6 p.m. and lasted for at least three hours also caused flooding in major streets that left several commuters stranded.

Several residents were also evacuated when water rose in various areas.

The CCDRRMO reported that 93 individuals from Barangay Tisa and 11 families in Barangay Pardo both in this city were rescued at the height of a heavy downpour.

Raquel Bohol-Arce, head of CCDRRMO, said that at least 13 houses were damaged due to flood.

At least 80 residents in Barangay Umapad, Mandaue City were also evacuated when water reached waist-deep in their area.

Some families living near the Cansaga River in Consolacion, Cebu were also rescued.

There were also some families in Minglanilla, Cebu that were evacuated to a public school due to floods.
