Former President Rodrigo Duterte conveyed sympathy over the passing of former President Fidel V. Ramos, whom Duterte described as a "great statesman, mentor and friend."
"It is with deep sadness to learn of the death of former president Fidel Valdez Ramos. I am one with his wife, Ming, his family, his friends, and the entire Filipino people in mourning the death of a great statesman, mentor, and friend," Duterte said in a statement.
Ramos died at the age of 94 on Sunday, July 31.
Duterte also enjoined the nation to honor Ramos' legacy and contributions to the country.
"As we grieve for his loss, let us honor his legacy of service and his significant contributions to the country," Duterte said. "May God grant eternal repose on his soul and give strength and solace to all of his bereaved."
Ramos, who is also known for his initials FVR, served as the country’s 12th president from 1992 to 1998.
Prior to his presidency, he served as chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and became the Secretary of National Defense two years later.
He was named as Military Hero of the Peaceful People Revolution for his paramount role in returning democracy to the Philippines.
