Police arrested the driver of the vehicle past midnight Saturday in a town a few kilometers away from the impact site.

A report from the office of Police Col. Ranser Evasco, Nueva Vizcaya police chief, said the victim, Julie Pasion, 45, was walking in front of the Region 2 Trauma and Medical Center when the vehicle driven by Mark Miranda, 41, hit him.

“The impact threw Pasion 20 meters away. The victim was taken to the hospital where was declared dead to serious injuries,” case officer Police Staff Sgt. Ronel D. Nicobesa said.

Miranda continued driving and police chased the suspect until he was intercepted in a checkpoint in Diadi, this province, at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

He claimed that he was not aware that he rammed the victim.

“Wala po ako alam na may nangyari na aksidente dahil malakas po ang ulan, at parang may nahulog lang (I did not notice there was an accident due to the heavy rain and I just thought that something just fell),” Miranda said.

Miranda was taken to the Bayombong police station and faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide (hit and run).
