Magnitude 4.6 quake hits E. Samar – Phivolcs


A moderately strong earthquake with a magnitude measuring 4.6 jolted eastern Samar around 10:01 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the quake was traced 18 kilometers (km) southwest of Hernani, eastern Samar.

The said earthquake was moderately strong at Intensity IV in Hernani and Llorente, eastern Samar. It was “weak” at Intensity III in Tacloban City and Dulag, Leyte; Borongan City, Giporlos, Maydolong, Gen. MacArthur, Lawaan, Balangiga and Quinapondan, eastern Samar; Basey, Marabut and Sta. Rita, Samar.

It was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Julita, Tanauan, Barugo, Palo, Pastrana, Alangalang and Abuyog, Leyte; Salcedo and Sulat, eastern Samar.

Meanwhile, the following instrumental intensities were also recorded by Phivolcs: Intensity IV in Borongan City, eastern Samar ; Intensity III in Catbalogan City, Samar; Dulag, Leyte ; Intensity II in Alangalang and Abuyog, Leyte; and Intensity I in Baybay and Ormoc City, Leyte.

Phivolcs clarified that no aftershocks and damage are expected due to this quake.
