CEBU CITY – Election paraphernalia can be turned into school materials, too.

A non-government organization in Mandaue City did this and started distributing school bags made out of campaign materials to some schools in the city.

Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes has announced that 499 tarpaulin bags have been distributed to pupils of the Cubacub Elementary School, Don Calixto Memorial Elementary School, and Casili Elementary School.

Turning campaign tarpaulins into school bags is a project of Kaabag Mandaue Foundation Inc. and Ritazo.

“Thank you so much to Kaabag Mandaue and Ritazo for making good use of election posters by turning them into school bags. This can be used by students who have limited resources to purchase new bags for the upcoming resumption of face-to-face classes,” Cortes said in a Facebook post.

According to Karla Victoria Cortes, president of Kaabag, the project is part of the group’s mission to lessen the hazards caused by plastic materials.

Karla said that after the elections last May, the group started collecting campaign tarpaulins for their “Tarps to School Bags” project.

Karla said some candidates and political groups voluntarily turned over their used campaign tarpaulins to support the project.

To help realize the project, Kaabag sought assistance from the the Mandaue City College Technological Entrepreneurial Skills Training Center for the creation of the school bags.
