Gatchalian: Dissatisfaction with K to 12 system growing, needs urgent review

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday, July 18 said the growing dissatisfaction on the K to 12 system is growing, thus, the need to review and formulate educational reforms.

Gatchalian is pointing to a Pulse Asia survey conducted last June 24 to 27 where 1,200 respondents revealed that 44 percent of adult respondents are dissatisfied with the program.

This, he noted, is 16 percentage points higher compared to the survey results done in September 2019, which showed that only 28 percent of respondents were dissatisfied with the K to 12 system.

The survey in June was commissed by Gatchalian, head of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture.

“Malinaw sa boses ng ating mga kababayan na hindi sila kuntento sa programa ng K to 12. Ito ay dahil hindi natutupad ang mga pangako nito at naging dagdag na pasanin lamang ito sa ating mga magulang at mga mag-aaral (The voices of many of our people is clear that they are not contented with the K to 12 program. And this is because most of its promises were not fulfilled and became and additional burden to the parents and the students),” said Gatchalian.

“Dapat nating suriin nang husto ang pagpapatupad ng K to 12 upang matiyak na natutupad nito ang layuning makapaghatid ng dekalidad na edukasyon at isulong ang pagiging competitive ng ating mga kabataan (We need to scrutinize the implementation of the K to 12 program to make sure that it can deliver the goal of bringing quality education and making our youth competitive),” he said.

Gatchalian earlier expressed his belief Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio would be able to efficiently take the lead in addressing concerns regarding the K to 12 program.

Duterte-Carpio is taking the education department portfolio and has vowed to introduce reforms in the education sector.
