My yoke is easy, and my burden light

REFLECTIONS TODAY

Jesus invites his disciples to come to him for a little rest. They have been very busy in their mission. And they deserve rest. They still have a lot of things to do, but Jesus wants them to relax, to pause, and to enjoy his presence among them. Jesus’ burden is light. What he asks from his disciples is easy to do, considering their being new in the field. They are former fisherfolks, tax collector, activist, and family men who are grappling with his unfamiliar teachings. Since they have left their occupation and their loved ones, Jesus assures them that he will not overburden them. He will respect them on their level.
The Pharisees, on the other hand, impose heavy burdens, which Jesus will later condemn. They are not considerate to those who are not like them, experts of the law.

Gospel • Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
