The Basakanons went up against contingents from different parts of the country. They competed in the International Category of the festival, considered as one of the world’s largest dance and festival competitions.

For their winning stint, the Basakanons showcased the colors and spirit of the world-renowned Sinulog Festival.

“Congratulations Lumad Basakanon for winning the Gold in the International Category in the Powerful Daegu Festival in Daegu South Korea,” said Ricky Ballesteros, co-chairman of the Korean-Philippine Festival Cultural Exchange Association.

Ballesteros, former executive director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc., said that the contingents from Mongolia came in second while the group representing Indonesia bagged a special award.

The Basakanons were one of the four Philippine groups that passed the qualifying round.

The Basakanons were eventually chosen as the country’s representatives since they were also the Free Interpretation Category winners in the Sinulog Festival 2020.

The 2020 Sinulog Festival was the last edition to have been held in the city due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tribu Lumad, which is also a regular fixture in international festivals, is Cebu City’s most awarded Sinulog contingent.
