DIGOS CITY (PNA) – A seven-year-old boy died on the spot while his five-year-old brother was injured when the grenade they were toying with exploded in Sitio Buongon, Barangay Rizal, Malalag, Davao del Sur Thursday, July 7.

Police Capt. Jocyviel Zamora, Malalag police chief, in a police report Saturday, July 9, said that he received a call from a councilor of Barangay Rizal reporting that a grenade exploded at around 11:05 a.m. and injured two minors and requesting police assistance and rescue ambulance.

Investigators rushed to the scene and found the body of Christian and his injured brother Kent near the tomb of their great-grandmother where they were reportedly playing with the explosive that they had found somewhere else.

Their grandmother who was inside the house heard the explosion and saw her bloodied grandchildren and immediately called for help, police said.

Personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) rushed Kent to the Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital here.

Malalag police later confirmed that it was indeed a hand grenade but they have yet to establish where the children found the explosive.
