Filipino math wizards win 13 medals, 15 awards in Indonesia math competition


Filipino math wizards garnered a total of 13 medals and 15 awards at this year’s Indonesia International Mathematics Competition (IIMC).

The Philippine team won two silvers, 11 bronze medals, and 15 merit awards in the 31-nation online competition held last June 30 to July 6.

Bagging the country’s silver medals were Robert Henrik Uy of St. John’s Institute and Kei Hang Derek Chan of St. Jude Catholic School.

The bronze medalists were Kai Daniella Hong of Victory Christian International School; Janelle Caryl Ng of Grace Christian College; Lance Gabriel Madrazo of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung of St. Stephen’s High School; Kody Briones of Philippine High School Main Campus; Ethan Jared Chan of British School Manila; Adrian Guanson and Alexandria Brianne Gochia, both from St. Jude Catholic School; and Ian Gabriel Hong of Victory Christian International School; Ambrose James Torreon of Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus; and Sean Kendrick Yeo of Pace Academy.

The other team members who earned merit awards were Reilyn Abbigayle So of St. Jude Catholic School; Trevor Achilles Barruga of Maria Montessori Holy Christian School; Jaden Nathan Hernandez of St. Stephen’s High School; Paul Vincent Leandrei Navarro of Stonyhurst Southville International School; Samuel Leonardo Jr. Zantua of Notre Dame of Greater Manila; Erik Nathan Estiva and Misha Elise Marcelo, both from Xavier School Nuvali; Caitlyn Lopingco of Victory Christian International School; Iris Lexi Ababon and Bert Jacob Tropicales of Philippine Science High School- Main Campus; Jeffrey Jan Jabanes of Pangasinan Universal Institute; Jacques Simon Timtiman of Philippine Science High School- Western Visayas Campus; Hans Ethan Ting of Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus; and Wynshanelle Gianeah Ng of Grace Christian College.

The Philippine delegation was headed by team leaders Joel Cardinal, Minerva Avecilla, and Kerish Villegas.

Topping the IIMC’s Key Stage II or elementary level was China, followed by Malaysia, and the United States.

In the Key Stage III or high school level, the US won the first place, followed by Thailand's Teams C and A.

Other participating countries were Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan, among others.
