Dengue cases in Zamboanga breach alert level

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Dengue cases have breached the alert level here as cases continue to surge in communities, according to the Zamboanga City Health Office.

The latest fatality was a nine-year-old girl from Barangay Tetuan who died on June 24.

Zamboanga City registered 90 dengue cases with one mortality for mortality Week 25 which ended on June 25.

Figures for this week breached the alert level but did not reach the epidemic threshold, according to City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite.

The health office has recorded 2,775 dengue cases from January 1 to June 25, 1,775 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

Fifty-two percent of victims belong to the 0 to nine age group with 31 percent of total cases belonging to the 10 to 19 age bracket.

Twenty persons have succumbed to the disease as of June 25.

The city government of Zamboanga has appealed to residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and cooperate with health authorities to stop the spread of the dengue virus.
