Relatives cry foul over alleged death of OFW by suicide in Dubai

GENERAL SANTOS -- The family of a Filipino domestic helper who reportedly committed suicide in Dubai has cried foul over victim’s death.

Relatives of Shona Bacalso Capacio, 45, doubted the report of Dubai police that the victim committed suicide by jumping off a residential building of her employer, Abdul Wahab Abdul Qadir Muhammad Berjab, a Yemeni national in Al Barsha, Dubai last April 29.

The victim’s remains arrived on Wednesday, June 29, at the General Santos City airport from Manila before it was brought to Bukidnon where she will be laid to rest.

Ramil Bacalso, the victim’s brother, said the family had requested the Forensic Unit of the Philippine National Police to conduct an autopsy on the victim’s cadaver to determine the cause of her death.

“We wanted to find out what really was the cause of her death,” Bacalso said.

He said that they doubted the report made by the director of Al Barsha Police Station, Brigadier General Abdul Rahim Muhammad Abdullah bin Shafi that the victim jumped off the widow of the building about ten meters high.

The report said that the victim suffered injuries and bruises from different parts of the body.

The victim’s relatives suspect that the victim was deliberately killed.

Capadacio went to Dubai in 2018 and was scheduled to return home this July after the termination of her employment contract.

Prior to her death, Bacalso claimed that the victim had complained about the maltreatment by her employer who compelled her to heavy workloads.

He said that there was an instance wherein the victim was reportedly choked by her employer after she failed to attend to her employer’s children who she served as babysitter.

The victim’s family also assailed the inaction of the Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration to provide assistance to the family of Capacio.
