Good-natured Butuan City barangay chairman slain


BUTUAN CITY (PNA) – The chairman of Barangay Sto. Niño here was killed by still unidentified gunmen Friday, June 24, the second shooting incident involving village officials in this city in just three days.

Police said the victim, Florencio Cagas, was gunned down at around 7:10 p.m. in Purok 7, Barangay Sto. Nino.

The victim sustained multiple bullet wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival in a private hospital here.

In a statement Saturday, June 25, the Liga ng mga Barangay (League of Villages)-Butuan described the victim as good-natured.

“Hopefully, justice will be served soon,” the group said while calling on authorities to fasttrack the investigation of Cagas’ murder.

Cagas was the second barangay shot dead here in a week. Three days earlier on June 21, Tuesday, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Chairman Nelbert Mancao Gacosta was gunned down by an unidentified assailant.
