Most people are visual learners, so photographs are essential in telling a story. It has to be clear, crisp, and interesting to capture the people’s attention. Two known photojournalists at Manila Bulletin know that all too well, and as part of the ongoing Earth + Lens 2022 partnership of Manila Bulletin and Huawei, Ali Vicoy and Noel Pabalate were invited to participate in an experiential activity to make use of the HUAWEI P50 Pro during their work-related coverages and travels, specifically to test out the smartphone’s camera prowess.

It is inevitable that sometimes you have to work from a distance from your subject. When you zoom in on it, more often the shots come out grainy and blurry. However, Noel Palabate, a lifestyle photographer at Manila Bulletin, shared that when he used the zoom feature of the HUAWEIi P50 Pro, the photos remained sharp and clear. He shared that in one of his trips at Bicol, he took a photo of the Mayon Volcano zoomed in at the tip, and was surprised at the detail. “That's the first time nanakita ko yung photo ko using a zoom feature of a phone, na clear and crisp pa yung output,” he said. He also took pictures of the view from an airplane window, expecting it to be blurry as the plane was moving. Instead, he was left amazed at the amount of detail he captured. It’s no wonder that this is easily one of his favorite features of the smartphone camera. Besides that, he also went on excitedly about the different modes available and what he loved about it– he mentioned the Aperture mode that makes shooting Portraits easier to blur the background, so the focus is crisp on your subject. He also liked the night mode as it's very detailed despite the low-lighting, “Kita pa rinyung details ng area– what you see is what you get.”

On the other hand, Ali, a veteran photographer at Manila Bulletin, and admittedly already a Huawei smartphone user, was in awe at the zoom lens as well. “Hindi siya ma-grano, talagangdetalyadosiya”, he shared.

When asked about their preferred camera setting, both said that although the auto mode already works incredibly well, they especially liked the flexibility of the  pro feature. “Pwedemongpaglaruanyungmga yon (camera setting) when I want to be more creative,” said Noel.

And according to Ali, using the pro feature of the phone’s camera feels like using a DSLR. Noel agreed and shared that besides the camera quality, he especially likes that the HUAWEI P50 Pro also has live view.

When asked if they’d use it for work, Noel said it can be used for lifestyle and other easy coverages– food, travel, and even portraiture,“It gives you a good result–good, vivid colors, and details.” Another reason why the HUAWEI P50 Pro can be used for work is because it has all the lenses you need. Whereas Ali said that when you’re pressed for time, the HUAWEI P50 Pro is the ideal smartphone camera to have on hand, because it can definitely deliver good, high quality, and newspaper-ready photos.”Kahit kung ‘yun (HUAWEI P50 Pro) ang gagamitinsadyaryo, hindisiya (photo) sumasabogeh.Tsakayung details nailalabas,” Ali shared.

They also recommend this smartphone camera as a great investment to newbie photographers just starting to build their portfolios. “It has all the features that you need in a camera,” Noel shared. It’s a lightweight and handy phone they can take anywhere and take photos with when inspiration suddenly strikes.
