United States pummels Poland for 5-1 in VNL


Three-time champion United States flexed its might anew as it pummeled Poland, 25-12, 25-21, 25-16, Friday in the Volleyball Nations League Women’s Leg at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The American remained aggressive throughout despite the persistent attempts of the Poles to clinch their second win in Week 2 and improve to five wins against a single loss for 15 points behind unbeaten Japan.

Alexandra Frantti spearheaded United States’ assault by firing 18 points on 15 kills and three blocks, while reinforcements also came from Rishel Kingdon and Reed Nia, who chipped in 12 points apiece.

The Americans displayed their strength particularly in the third set, where they built an early 12-7 and pulled away to 20-11.

Poland briefly stopped the bleeding with an attack, but back-to-back kills from the Americans padded the lead 22-12.

The United States was so dominant that it fired 51 attacks against Poland’s 35.

The Americans also provided a sturdy net defense by posting nine blocks.

Martyna Czyrnianska scored 12 points for Poland, which absorbed its first loss in the week to slip at 4-3 for 10 points in eighth place.

Next up for the United States will be China on Saturday at 7 p.m. while Poland will be facing Belgium at 3 p.m. on the same day.
