Carlos Yulo leads individual all-around in Asian Championships


Carlos Yulo advanced to the final in two apparatus while leading the individual all-around after Day 1 of the 9th Asian Senior Gymnastics Championships in Doha, Qatar Wednesday.

The two-time world champion and Tokyo Olympian spearheaded the final qualifiers in the floor exercise with a score of 14.800 while finishing sixth in still rings with 14.100.

He, however, failed to qualify in the pommel horse after finishing 20th with 12.933.

After three events, Yulo leads the individual all-around with 41.833 ahead of Youth Olympics gold medalist Yin Dehang of China (41.800) and Yang Jiaxing also of China (41.700).

Jan Gwynn Timbang is at 27th after finishing 33rd in floor exercise (12.300), 35th in pommel horse (11.267) and 46th in still rings (10.967).

Other Filipinos, however, failed to advance in the three apparatus.

John Ivan Cruz finished 16th in floor exercise, as well as Juancho Miguel Besana at 30th (12.433).

Besana also did not advance in pommel horse after finishing 38th with 10.833, even as Justine Ace De Leon, who finished 41st in still rings with 11.267.

The remaining three apparatus – vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar – are being contested at presstime.

Apparatus finals will be held Saturday and Sunday.
