Japan edges Poland, remains unbeaten in VNL


Japan swept Poland, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, to keep its record unscathed at the start of Week 2 of the Volleyball Nations League Women’s Leg at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Tuesday night.

The Japanese banked on the trio of Sarina Koga, Arisa Inoue and Haruyo Shimamura to topple Poland and extend their winning run to five matches.

Koga unleashed 19 points while Inoue and Shimamura added 17 and 10 points to power Japan, whose scorching attacks demolished Poland’s defense.

Koga and Inoue also torched the net with a combined 32 of the team’s 49 kills.

Shimamura also contributed nine attacks even as Kotona Hayashi and Mami Yokota teamed up for eight spikes.

None from Poland scored in double figures with Olivia Rozanski and Magdalena Jurczyk posting nine points each.

The Polish crew absorbed its second loss against three victories.
