Woman dies, 2 others hurt as SUV hits tricycle in QC

A woman died while two others were injured after the tricycle they were riding was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City early Monday morning, June 13.

Police Cpl. Jess Domigan, investigator of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Traffic Enforcement Unit (DTEU), said that the fatality, Evangeline Bautista, 50, of Sampaloc, Manila, sustained a head injury.

He said Bautista’s daughter, Abegail Montefalcon, 18, and the tricycle driver, Mark Anthony Dionicio, 31, both sustained minor injuries.

According to the DTEU, the tricycle and the SUV were both travelling along the southbound lane of Commonwealth Ave. at around 3:00 a.m.

Upon reaching Microtel in Brgy. UP Campus, the SUV driven by Myrvin Cortes, 47, accidentally bumped the rear portion of the tricycle.

The tricycle then hit a concrete barrier and overturned on to the road pavement.

Police said that the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. Bautista was declared dead on arrival.

Both vehicles were damaged.

Based on Cortes’ statement, Domigan said that the tricycle driver allegedly tried to occupy the lane the SUV, which led to the accident.

The investigator added that victims and the SUV driver negotiated for the settlement of the case.
