ECHAGUE, Isabela -- One person died while another was injured when the vehicle they were riding in slammed into a concrete parapet and caught fire on Maharlika Highway in the vicinity of Barangay Castillo here Saturday.
Initial report from Police Major Amy dela Cruz, spokesperson of the Isabela Provincial Police Office, said that the Echague police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office immediately responded to the accident at 2:50 p.m.
Police identified the injured as driver Rogelio Daria, 43, of Barangay Buneg, Echague, and the fatality as passenger Wilson Alambay of Barangay Babaran, Echague.
Investigation revealed that their vehicle, a red Honda Civic sedan with license plate TMJ-168, was traversing the national highway on the way to Alicia, Isabela and overtook a vehicle after passing Castillo Elementary School.
Daria lost control and the car crashed into the concrete parapet of the southbound lane and flipped over into the rice field and caught fire.
He and Alambay sustained injuries and were taken to the Echague District Hospital.
However, Alambay was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician while Daria was transferred to the Southern Isabela Medical Center in Santiago City, Isabela.
