Thousands of netizens join gov't online earthquake drill


The government's online Second Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) for this year has generated more than 105,000 views and were participated in by over 17,000 netizens on Thursday, June 9.

"There were also 80,380 engagements, one hour after the livestream ended. This was the 8th earthquake drill held via online," the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said in a statement.

Defense Secretary and concurrent NDRRMC Chairman Delfin Lorenzana urged the public to continuously support and engage in preparedness activities which is aimed at educating and preparing the public in times of strong quakes.

OCD Administrator and NDRRMC Executive Director Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad emphasized the importance of a united effort in the attainment of making communities ready and safe.

"The cooperation of the public and other stakeholders is very important in ensuring the safety of the community," said Jalad.

The NSED was supported by various government officials that include Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, Labor Sec. Silvestro Bello III, Social Welfare Sec. Roland Bautista and Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr.. Trade Union Congress of the Philippines President Raymond Democrito Mendoza also gave his message of support.

NSED is a quarterly event that seeks to strengthen the earthquake preparedness of the public.

Due to the pandemic, the conduct of the earthquake drill was moved online in 2020.

The 3rd Quarter NSED will be held on September 8, 2022 at 9 a.m.
