Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said this after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Sunday raised the Alert Level 1 status over the volcano after a 17-minute phreatic eruption.

In a statement, Andanar said the Palace is on top of the situation.

"The Executive is closely monitoring the condition of Bulusan Volcano after an eruption occurred this morning," he said.

"All concerned agencies are on standby 24/7 after Alert Level 1 has been raised," he added.

The acting Palace spokesman likewise asked the affected residents to stay alert and cooperate with the government amid the volcano's unrest.

"We remind the public, particularly the residents of surrounding areas, to be vigilant, monitor any development regarding the volcano's condition, and cooperate with local authorities," he said.

According to Phivolcs, the phreatic eruption was "poorly visible through cloud cover over the edifice although a steam-rich grey plume at least one kilometer tall was observed from Juban, Sorsogon."
