‘The Roundup,’ ‘Doctor Strange’ dominate Korean box office in May with $107-M total gross


The Korean film “The Roundup” and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” were the top-grossing movies in South Korea in May with a combined total gross of $107 million.

“The Roundup” is an action film starring Ma Dong-seok, Son Seok-koo, and Choi Gwi-hwa that was released in Korea on May 18.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), which tracks box office receipts, “The Roundup” topped the monthly box office for May, selling more than seven million tickets and grossing $57.9 million for a revenue share of 48.09 percent for the month.

As of June 3, it is currently the No. 1 movie in South Korea this year with total admissions of eight million and revenue of $66.72 million.

Placing second for the month of May is Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, released in Korea on May 4, with 5.8 million tickets sold and $49.35 million in gross for a revenue share of 41 percent.

To date, it is currently the No. 2 movie in South Korea in 2022 with 5.8 million tickets sold and gross of $49.6 million.
