Fishing vessel caught allegedly using illegal method in Tayabas Bay


QUEZON -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-4A’s) -- Fisheries Protection Law Enforcement Group (BFAR-FPLEG) has caught a fishing vessel in the act of fishing using the prohibited ‘buli-buli’ system in Tayabas Bay on Wednesday, June 1.

The erring vessel was caught in the municipal waters of Pagbilao town.

According to Danilo Larita Jr., fishery law enforcement officer of BFAR-4A, their team based in Padre Burgos town responded to a report involving a vessel which was illegally fishing using ‘buli-buli’ in Tayabas Bay.

The arrested suspect was identified as Rustum Bermas, the owner and captain of the fishing vessel, and a resident of Purok 1-A in Barangay Dalahican, Lucena City.

The use of ‘buli-buli’ or modified Danish Seine in fishing has been prohibited in Philippine waters by Republic Act 8550 as amended by R.A. 10654 in relation to the Fisheries administrative order or FAO 246-1.

The fishing boat was towed by the patrol boat of the FPLEG Team Padre Burgos in Brgy. Campo, Padre Burgos for custody and safekeeping, and for the investigation and documentation to be conducted for the filing of appropriate cases against the suspect.
