The Roman Catholic Church observes Tuesday. May 31, the Feast of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth after the Blessed Mother was informed by the Archangel Gabriel that her cousin, who was barren and advanced in years, was expecting a child.
In commemoration of the feast, holy masses, novenas, and special devotions in honor of the Blessed Mother will be offered in several churches, particularly in Marian shrines in the country and across the world.
In today’s masses, readings will focus on the Blessed Mother’s visit to Elizabeth, who was then six months heavy with the child.
As recorded in the Gospel of Luke, Elizabeth and the infant in her womb, who was to be John the Baptist (the precursor of Christ), were inspired by the Holy Spirit at her arrival. Sensing the presence of the Divine Savior in Mary’s womb, “the infant leaped for joy.”
Elizabeth greeted the Blessed Mother with what now forms part of the Hail Mary prayer, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary responded with what is now known as the ‘Magnificat,’ also known as the Song of Mary, a canticle frequently sung liturgically in Christian churches.
The Church said the Feast of the Visitation is a clear reminder that “with faith in God, nothing is impossible.”
